Dr. Maria Papafotiou is a Professor, Head of the Laboratory of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, and the postgraduate program "Landscape Architecture" at the Agricultural University of Athens. She obtained her first degree in Crop Science from the Agricultural University of Athens in 1983 and her Ph.D. in Horticulture: The Physiology of Flowering from Wye College, University of London in 1988. She specializes in floricultural crops with emphasis on micropropagation, growth, and flowering manipulation, urban and landscape ornamental horticulture, green roofs, and garden and park sustainable design. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses on floriculture, ornamental plants, environmental horticulture, landscape architecture history, and planting design. She has been a supervisor of many PhD, MSc, and MLA programs. Her current research includes exploiting native plants for ornamental use (propagation/micropropagation and growth manipulation), sustainable green roofs, native vegetation management and design in archaeological sites, and native plant ground covers. She has more than 400 publications (over 145 in peer-reviewed international journals). She has acted as a coordinator/member in 25 funded research programs and as a reviewer for over 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. She is also a member of the board of the Greek Society for Horticultural Science and an editorial board member of the American Journal of Plant Science.
