Dr. Jesus Lafuente Baraza, MD, FRCSEd, FRCS Glas, PhD, is a consultant neurosurgeon at the Hospital Universitario del Mar, Barcelona, Spain. His medical training was at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain, and his neurosurgical residency and internships were at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen's Square, London, UK, where he also spent one year as a Spinal Fellow completing his PhD thesis “Arthroplasty as an alternative to Arthrodesis in the treatment of cervical spondylothic disease”. He is currently director of the Spine Unit at Hospital del Mar, a joint venture with orthopedic spinal surgeons, and codirects the Pituitary clinic alongside ophthalmology and Endocrinology. He was recently appointed Associate Professor at the UAB (Autonomous University of Barcelona). His special interests include skull base neurosurgery, Chiari and syringomyelia, spinal deformity, spinal tumors, degenerative disease, and surgery in developing countries. He started in 2008 as part of the faculty staff of the initial EANS Spine section course. He was also appointed as faculty in the WFNS spine section which he left as he was appointed President-elect of the EANS during the Madrid annual meeting in 2017. He is a current reviewer in the National Spanish Neurosurgical Journal as well as in Acta Neuroquirurgica, World Neurosurgery, and the European Spine Journal.
