Prof. Dr. João Ramalho-Santos is a professor at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra, Portugal, where he concluded his Ph.D in cell biology in 1997. He was a post-doctoral fellow in reproductive biology at Oregon Health & Science University, USA (1997–2000), a visiting scientist at the University of Pittsburgh, USA (2003–2006), and a Fulbright fellow at the University of California San Francisco, USA (2009). He is currently the head of the Biology of Reproduction and Stem Cells Group at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology at the University of Coimbra (para of the CIBB Consortium), where he works on the bioenergetics and metabolism of gametes and stem cells, and on science communication and bioethics issues related both to assisted reproduction and metabolism and aging and disease. In addition, he is an associate editor of the WIRE Mechanisms of Disease, the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Biomolecules, Fertility & Sterility Science, and Human Reproduction, and he is a reviewer of over 50 journals and 10 agencies. He has over 500 reviews and 330 editorial records in Web of Science and is a member of the National Ethics Council for Life Sciences (CNECV).
