Dr. Jens André Hammerl is a Senior
Researcher in the "Consultant Laboratory for Vibrio spp. in Food" in
the Divison "Diagnostics, Pathogen Characterization, Parasites in
Food" of the Department "Biological Safety" at the German
Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Berlin, Germany. He obtained his
PhD degree from the Humboldt University of Berlin with work on genetic
characteristics of temperate phages. He now works as the head of the
"Consultant Laboratory for Vibrio spp. in Food" and the Deputy Head
of the "Consilliary Laboratory for Yersinia" on microbiological and
molecular tracing of food-borne pathogens (esp. Vibrio/Yersinia, but also i.e.,
E. coli, Klebsiella) in food chains. Further research interests are focused on
the biology and genetics of mobile genetic elements (i.e., bacteriophages &
plasmids) and therapeutic applications of phages from environmental,
food-borne, and highly pathogenic bacteria. To date, he served as an advisor
for graduate students, published >120 articles in international journals,
and presented more than >200 abstracts in international and local
conferences.
