Dr. Samuel DeMaria Jr., MD, is the Vice Chair for Research
in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine. He holds
the dual appointment of professor in his home department as well as the
department of otolaryngology. He did his residency at Mount Sinai, where he was
a Chief Resident. Since that time, he has served in numerous leadership roles
for the department, including as a residency program director, simulation
center co-director, and division chief for liver transplantation. His research
interests center around clinical trials and patient-centered perioperative
outcomes, as well as simulation-based education and performance studies. He has
authored over 100 publications, edited several textbooks, and received numerous
research and teaching awards for his work in the department.
Dr. Garrett W. Burnett, MD, is an Assistant Professor in
Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at the Icahn School of
Medicine at Mount Sinai. He completed medical school at the University of Texas
Medical Branch. He then completed residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at
Mount Sinai, followed by a fellowship in regional anesthesiology and acute pain
medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He serves as the
Director of Operations and core simulation faculty for the Mount Sinai
Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine Human Emulation,
Education, and Evaluation Lab for Patient Safety and Professional Study (HELPS)
Center. Additionally, he is certified in Focused Assessed Transthoracic Echo
(FATE) and trained in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), for which he teaches
the PGY-1 and PGY-4 POCUS rotations. He has published numerous studies on
simulation and regional anesthesia as well as presented at national and
international meetings.
