Josefina Casas received a degree in
Biochemistry from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1981). In 1987, Josefina
Casas completed the PhD thesis on the biochemistry of insect juvenile hormone
at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research. In 1988–1990, Josefina Casas completed
postdoctoral fellowship (Fulbright scholarship) at the University of
California, Davis, in the group of Prof. Bruce Hammock. Josefina Casas tenured
as a Staff Scientist at CSIC in 1988, and was promoted to Scientific Researcher
in 2009. Since 2010, Josefina Casas has served as the co-leader of the Research
Unit on BioActive Molecules. Josefina Casas is the coordinator of the
lipidomics facility at the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia
(IQAC-CSIC). Current research is focused on the development and validation of
chemical tools used to advance the knowledge of the chemical biology of
sphingolipids, emphasizing their interest as therapeutic targets, and the
discovery of modulators of sphingolipid metabolism enzymes and functions of use
as pharmacological tools and hits of therapeutic/diagnostic interest.
