Dr. Junkal Landaburu-Aguirre is a researcher at the IMDEA Water Institute. She obtained an MSc (Chemistry) in 2004 from the University of Basque Country, Spain. She started her PhD studies in 2006 in the Environmental and Chemical Engineering group of the University of Oulu, Finland, from where she obtained her doctoral degree in 2012. She joined IMDEA Water in January 2015 with a Marie Curie AMAROUT II fellowship. Currently, she is focused on the implementation of membrane technology (membrane bioreactors and pressure-driven membranes) for wastewater treatment, desalination, pre-concentration, and removal of emerging compounds such as micronanoplastics. In addition, she is also involved in a research group focused on membrane recycling and Life Cycle Assessment.
Prof. Dr. Eloy García-Calvo has been a professor of Chemical Engineering at the Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering, University of Alcalá (UAH) since 1992 and was the director of IMDEA Water from its creation until 2022. He received his PhD in Industrial Chemistry from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in 1980. He has acted as Vice Chancellor for Research at UAH, Manager of the RTD Environmental Programme within the National RTD, member of the CNEAI (National Evaluation of Research Activity) (board no. 6 of Architecture and Engineering), Coordinator of the Technology Programme for the Environment of the Madrid Region and evaluator of scientific projects in the European Union, Hungary, Argentina, and Spain (Galicia, Aragon, Basque Country). He has participated in 35 research projects at European (i.e., LIFE TRASFOMEM, IMPASSE), national (INREMEM and INREMEM 2.0), and regional level (REMTAVARES), leading 32 of them. In 2015, he took office as Academic of the Royal National Academy of Pharmacy.
Dr. Serena Molina is a researcher at the IMDEA Water Institute. She obtained her PhD from the Complutense University of Madrid. Her knowledge of material science has been complemented by a Master's Degree in Advanced Specialization in Plastics and Rubber at UIMP-CSIC. She joined IMDEA Water in July 2014. She has worked at the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (ICTP-CSIC). She has experience in the evaluation, modification, and characterization (spectroscopic and morphological) of polymeric membranes (reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration membrane bioreactors, and electrodialysis). She has participated in 17 research projects about the development and testing of polymeric membranes for different water treatments. Currently, she is involved in different projects related to membrane recycling and the implementation of membrane technology in desalination, wastewater treatment, recovery of valuable compounds (zero liquid discharge, ZLD), and removal of emerging compounds.
