Prof. José A. M. Prates has been a Full Professor since 2010, and the Head of the Quality of Animal Products Laboratory since 2000 at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon (Portugal). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1990), a Master’s degree in Biochemistry (1993), a Ph.D. degree in Animal Science and Technology (2000), and a degree in Habilitation in Animal Science and Technology (2007). He was a member of the Management Committee of COST Action FA1401 (PiGutNet) and COST Action CA15215 (IPEMA), both involving more than 20 countries each. He is a Foundation Partner (2008) and Manager of the biotechnology company NZYTech—Genes and Enzymes, Ltd. His research interests are related to the development of novel feeding strategies to improve livestock production efficiency, carcass composition, meat quality, and human health. The manipulation of fat and bioactive fatty acid deposition in livestock species is a major research topic of his. The supplementation of monogastric diets with recombinant carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) is also a major approach.
