Romildo D. Toledo Filho is a Full Professor of Materials and Structures at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PEC/COPPE/UFRJ), Brazil. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and Researcher 1A agreed to by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. He is Director of the Center Brazil-China for Climate Change and Energy Technology Innovation, Head of the Sustainability Center for Research and Education on Environmental Friendly Materials and Technologies (NUMATS) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and President of the Brazilian Society for Non-Conventional Materials (ABMTENC). He graduated in Civil Engineering (1983) from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) with a master's degree (1986) and a doctorate (1997) in the same area from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (Puc-Rio). He completed a post-doctoral internship in Germany, Technical University of Dresden, between 2009 and 2010. He has conducted extensive research on vegetable fiber-reinforced cement composites, bamboo materials characterization, the use of bamboo as concrete reinforcement, full-culm bamboo characterization, bamboo-earth construction, bamboo concrete, and rice husk ash and sugarcane bagasse as mineral additives for concrete.
