Paulo A. F. Martins is a Professor of Manufacturing at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon, with a Doctor Technices honoris causa by the Technical University of Denmark, and fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP). He was President of the Scientific Council of IST (2009–2012), as well as Vice-President (2016) and President of the School Council of IST (2017–2020). He received the A M Strickland Prize by the Manufacturing Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), UK (2005), the Donald Julius Groen Prize by the Structural Technology and Materials Group of IMechE, UK (2008), the Thomas Hawksley Gold Medal of IMechE, UK (2015), the Thatcher Bros Prize by the Manufacturing Industries Division Board of IMechE, UK (2015), the Scientific Prize Santander/University of Lisbon (2018), and the Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity (JSTP) International Prize for R&D in Precision Forging (2021). His main research interest is manufacturing, particularly numerical and experimental analysis and the development of forming and joining by forming processes.
