Achilleas Garoufis is a Professor at the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Ioannina, Greece. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry from the University of Ioannina in 1985 and 1989, respectively. He was a Post-doctoral fellow at the Laboratory of Biophysics and Bioinorganic Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Bergen (1993–1994), a Post-doctoral fellow at the Laboratory of Organic and General Chemistry, University of Brussels (1993–1995), then joined the University of Ioannina in 2000 as a Lecturer, served as an Assistant Professor (2005–2010) and an Associate Professor (2010–2015), then was promoted to Professor in 2015. His research interests include the synthesis and characterization of Inorganic and Organometallic compounds, NMR spectroscopy, polarized light spectroscopic techniques (CD, LD) analytical techniques (MS), etc., in order to study: (i) the structure and conformation of the synthesized compounds; (ii) the weak interactions with biological macromolecules (e.g. oligo-nucleotides or oligo-peptides); and (iii) the weak interactions between single molecules leading in self nano-aggregates.
