Professor Joseph P. Y. Kao is a Professor of Physiology and the Associate Director of the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology (BioMET) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Kao graduated from Arizona State University with a B.S. degree in Chemistry and earned a Ph.D. degree in Biophysical Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He conducted postdoctoral research in cell biology and physiology at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, San Diego, before joining the faculty at the University of Maryland. Dr. Kao is an expert in the design, synthesis, and application of molecular probes for studying physiological functions in biological systems. His research interests include molecular probes, caged molecules, cellular physiology, neurophysiology, erythrocyte biology, optical microscopy, fluorescence, magnetic imaging modalities, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).
