Author Biographies

Dr. Kien Tat Wai is a post-doctoral Fellow at the Engineering department, University of Canterbury. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Fishing Sciences at the Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1999, his Master of Science in Environmental Engineering in 2003, and his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering at The University of Auckland in 2021. He served as a Technical Research Assistant at the Universiti Putra Malaysia from 2003 to 2008, a Research Assistant at the Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College from 2008 to 2011, a Researcher at the Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur from 2011 to 2015, and a Graduate Teaching Assistant/Postgraduate Researcher at the University of Auckland from 2017 to 2022. Dr. Kien Tat Wai is interested in environmental engineering (water), fisheries, and sustainability.
Prof. Aisling D. O'Sullivan is a Professor in Ecological Engineering. She leads CELTS (Centre for Ecological Technology Solutions, CELTS.org.nz), which she founded to meet the research gap in ecological engineering in Aotearoa New Zealand. CELTS is part of the Department of Civil & Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Aisling obtained her Bachelor of Science (Hons: 1st Class) degree at the University College Dublin and her Ph.D. degree at the National University of Ireland, and she was a Post-Doctoral Research and Teaching Fellow at the University of Oklahoma. Her research interests involve monitoring, modeling, and treating non-point source metal and nutrient contaminants that are difficult to remove. She currently leads a National Science Challenge cross-disciplinary team prototyping water treatment filters made from biowastes. Upon the end of their design life, these products are regenerated into safe (green) materials that become a new resource. Aisling's pedagogical goal is to inspire, enable, and help pioneer the next generation of ecologically competent engineers.
Dr. Ricardo Bello-Mendoza is an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury, Civil and Natural Resources Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. He obtained his Bachelor's degree at the Instituto Tecnológico de Tapachula in 1991, and his M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Manchester in 1997 and 1999. He served as an Investigador Titular at the El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) from 2000 to 2023, and as Senior Lecturer at the University of Canterbury from 2013 to 2023. His research interests are in the area of innovative technology for wastewater treatment and resource recovery, including anaerobic biotechnology and advanced oxidation processes. The fate of persistent organic contaminants in the aquatic environment is another field of study.
