Dr. Marta Domini is an assistant professor at the Department of Civil, Environmental, Architectural Engineering and Mathematics (DICATAM), University of Brescia (UniBS), Italy, working in Sanitary-Environmental Engineering on WASH, wastewater, sewage and fecal sludge management, waste recovery and reuse, industrial symbiosis, and environmental protection. She graduated from the Polytechnic of Turin (IT) in Environmental Engineering in 2006. After working for 8 years as an environmental engineer in the public and private sectors, she obtained her Ph.D. at the University of Brescia in 2017, with a study on urban sanitation planning in peri-urban contexts of Tanzania. As a postdoc, she coordinated and developed WASH-related research for development and humanitarian aid, at CeTAmb LAB, UniBS (2017), at Tufts University, Boston, USA (2018-2020), and studies on wastewater and sludge treatment and recovery at DIMI and DICATAM, UniBS (2021). She is a board member of GITISA, Italy.

Giorgio Bertanza started his research activity in the field of Sanitary-Environmental Engineering at the University of Pavia after graduating in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Brescia (1990). In 1996, he began his Ph.D. in Sanitary Engineering at the Technical University of Milan. At present, he is a Full Professor in Sanitary-Environmental Engineering (since March 2005) at the Department of Civil, Environmental, Architectural Engineering and Mathematics of the University of Brescia, after being a Researcher (1998–2001) and Associate Professor (2001–2005). He has been the director of his department since 2021. His teaching activity concerns several topics: water, wastewater, and solid waste treatment plant management and design. He has given lectures at different university courses (Brescia, Pavia, Mantua) and about 70 specialization courses in Italy and abroad. His research activity deals mainly with the following topics: techno-economic and environmental assessment of water and waste management systems, removal of trace pollutants in water and wastewater, technologies for upgrading/optimizing Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP), performance testing and operation criteria of WWTP, landfill leachate and industrial wastewater treatment, solid waste recycling, and treatment and disposal. He is the author or co-author of more than 300 scientific works (120 indexed on Scopus) and participated in more than 130 national and international conferences.
