Dr. Stanley Perlman is an American microbiologist and coronavirus researcher. He is a professor of microbiology and immunology and a professor of pediatrics and holds the University of Iowa Distinguished Chair in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. He has researched coronaviruses for 42 years. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and a member of the American Society for Microbiology. He has a PhD in biophysics from MIT and graduated from medical school at the University of Miami. His laboratory has been interested in the pathogenesis of murine coronavirus infections for several years and also studies three respiratory human coronavirus infections: SARS-coronavirus, MERS-Coronavirus, and SARS-coronavirus-1. His primary areas of investigation include immunology and virology. The concepts of his immunology study are interwoven with issues in coronaviruses and lung disease. His biological studies span a wide range of topics, including respiratory disease, cytokines, and virulence. His coronavirus research includes themes of acute pneumonia and PASC.
