Mikael Skurnik received his M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Oulu, Finland, in 1977 and 1985, respectively. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of Bacteriology at the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology, Human Microbiome Research Program, Research Programs Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland. He is currently the Associate Editor of Viruses and he has served as a member on the Editorial Boards of several microbiology journals. He has studied molecular biology and genetics of bacterial pathogenesis and bacteriophages.
