Dr. Wataru Shimizu currently serves as a professor of the department of cardiovascular medicine at the Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, Japan. He is also Visiting Professor of National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, Shiga University of Medical Science, Tokyo Medical College, and Saitama Medical College. He has contributed to many national and international guidelines and expert consensus statements on inherited arrhythmia syndromes and pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. He was awarded First Prize of YIA of Basic Research at 1997 NASPE (HRS), YIA of Physiology, Pharmacology, and Pathology at 1998 ACC, and 33rd Sato Award, Japan Heart Foundation at 2008 JCS. He is a President of Japanese Heart Rhythm Society and Asian-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS). Shimizu is now Editor-in-Chief of Internal Medicine and Deputy Editor of JACC Asia. His primary research interest has been in cardiac arrhythmias, particularly inherited arrhythmia syndromes and sudden cardiac death, and has conducted many clinical and basic research on inherited arrhythmia, such as LQTS and Brugada syndrome.
