Author Biographies

Georgios Geropoulos graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), School of Medicine, and he is a PhD candidate at the same University. Following his graduation, he worked as a General Surgery resident at the Hippocration General Hospital of Thessaloniki, Greece, between 2017 and 2019. Currently, he is a Junior Clinical Fellow in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at University College London Hospitals. His main research interests include minimally invasive surgery, biostatistics, and biomedical engineering. He has been a member of the Society of Junior Doctors since 2017, actively participating in many of its research and educational activities. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Board.
Kyriakos Psarras is an Associate Professor in General Surgery at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He received an MD from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in 1992 and a PhD in Medical Sciences from Keio University in 1998. He served as a resident in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the VUmc from October 2002 to April 2003, as a resident in General Surgery at the Hippocrates General Hospital of Thessaloniki from April 2003 to April 2007, and as a Consultant of General Surgery at the Hippocrates General Hospital of Thessaloniki from 2009 to 2012. He completed the ESSO Advanced Course on Upper GI Surgical Oncology at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart and worked as a Consultant and Lecturer in General Surgery at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from 2012 to 2015. His research interests include laparoscopic surgery, colorectal cancer, thyroid surgery, pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis, colon, cirrhosis, and stem cell research in surgery.
Georgios Koimtzis is currently working as a Medical Doctor at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust Poplar Grove, Stockport, UK. He is also a Clinical Research Fellow in Transplantation at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, UK. He is a member of the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. He holds an MD from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. His research interests include laparoscopic surgery, general surgery, and surgical critical care.

Anna Michopoulou is the Research and Development Project Leader. She obtained a Bachelor's in Biology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in 2007 and a Master's in Biosciences, Sciences, Technologies, Health from the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon in 2010. She was awarded a PhD in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology from Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 in 2016. She served as a Research Engineer at the Laboratory of Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from December 2010 to October 2012; as a PhD Research Scholar at the Laboratoire de Biologie Tissulaire et Ingénierie Thérapeutique (LBTI) from October 2012 to September 2016; as a Temporary Teaching and Research Attaché at the Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 from October 2015 to September 2016. She has been a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Biohellenika S.A. since 2018 and at the Department of Biochemistry of the Medical School at Aristotle's University of Thessaloniki since 2022. She is an Academic Tutor at Metropolitan College, School of Dietetics. Her research interests include cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
Maria Papaioannou graduated from the Justus-Liebig University of Giessen in 2002. From 2002 to 2006 she worked as a researcher at the Institute of Genetics, Department of Biology and Chemistry, of the Justus-Liebig University of Giessen. In 2006 she received a Doctoral Degree in Science from the Justus-Liebig University of Giessen, Germany with the grade "Excellent". Until February 2007 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Human Genetics of Friedrich Schiller University of Jena in Germany. From 2007 to 2008 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Medical Radiobiology of the University of Essen in Germany. From October 2008 she was an Adjunct Faculty member at the Department of Biological Applications and Technology at the University of Ioannina, Greece. In 2012, she was employed as a Lecturer at the School of Medicine at Aristotle University. Since 2016 she has been an Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her research is focused on the study and identification of biological molecules and their interactions, and the detection of post-translational and epigenetic modifications, focusing on the processes of gene expression and their correlation with prevention, prognosis, and laboratory diagnosis, as well as their contribution to the treatment of diseases, with emphasis on urogenital, gastrointestinal, and endocrine diseases.
Kokkona Kouzi-Koliakou graduated in 1979 from the School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She received her degree in Internal Medicine in 1985. She received her PhD with honors in 1985. From 1987 to 1989, she served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, School of Medicine. In 1990 she received a scholarship from the Greek Ministry of Education within the framework of the Greek–German Educational Exchange Program and worked in the laboratory of Professor R. Timpl at the Max Planck Institute in Munich. From 1982 to the present she has been a member of the faculty at the Laboratory of Histology and Embryology, School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and since 2012 she has been a Professor. From 2017 to 2020, she served as Director of the Histology-Embryology Laboratory, and from 2019 to 2021, she served as Head of the Department of Anatomy and Pathology. From 2019 to the present, she has served as a member of the Board of Trustees and General Assembly of Aristotle University School of Medicine. From 2006 to the present, she has served as Chair of the Scientific Board and Medical Director of Biohellenika, a private biotechnology company. From 2019 to the present, she serves as Co-Director of the graduate program “Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine” at the School of Medicine. Her main research activities are stem cells and tissue regeneration.
