Author Biographies

Dr. Saima Hirani is an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia. Her research interests relate to mental health and mental health promotion, particularly for vulnerable and high-risk populations. Her research focuses on what factors and interventions can enhance the capacity of individuals, families, and communities to take control of their mental health and support others’ well-being. Working with multidisciplinary teams, her research provides key insights to guide healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers to improve practices and approaches to mental health promotion.

Nilanga Aki Bandara is a sessional instructor at the School of Kinesiology, a UBC medical student, and an MKin graduate. He has always maintained a passion for physical activity and health promotion. As a medical student, he sees great value in the ability of physical activity to impact the health of people, communities, and society. In terms of his areas of current research, he has a special interest in understanding the challenges that vulnerable populations face when it comes to accessing physical activity-related resources.
