Dr. Lei Xu is an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Xu obtained PhD from the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center. After graduation, she pursued postdoctoral training in the Steele Laboratories for Tumor Biology, Department of Radiation Oncology, MGH and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Xu has built a productive Neurofibromatosis research program at Steele Laboratories for Tumor Biology, focusing on NF2 and Schwannomatosis. The translational goal of this research program is to develop innovative strategies to enhance treatment efficacy and improve patient quality of life. The approach is to understand the biology of schwannoma progression and identify new cellular and molecular mechanisms of tumor growth and hearing loss, and validate them as targets in animal models. Dr. Xu's group developed the cerebellopontine angle mouse model of vestibular schwannoma that faithfully reproduce schwannoma-induced hearing loss, and identified novel therapeutic strategies for NF2.
