Spyros Papageorgiou was born in Athens in 1934. Papageorgiou studied Physics at Athens University and received a Master's Degree in 1956. After obligatory military service, Papageorgiou received a State Scholarship for graduate studies in Theoretical Physics at Oxford and Sussex Universities and a PhD from Sussex University in 1964. Papageorgiou was appointed junior Research Assistant in Nucl. Res. Centr. ‘Demokritos’, Athens, in 1964. Papageorgiou was appointed Research Assistant in the Theoretical Division of CERN (1968-1970). Papageorgiou's particular interests in Nuclear Physics (β-decay) and Strong Interactions. Papageorgiou was appointed Corresponding Fellow between CERN and Demokritos (1970-1973).
