Michael Kontominas is a Chemistry graduate of the University of Athens, Greece (1975). He earned his Ph.D. in Food Science (Food Chemistry) from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, USA in 1979. After a short postdoc at Rutgers University, he joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department, University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece in 1980, where he was promoted to Full Professor in 1997. He served as a visiting scholar at Rutgers University, Department of Food Science (1984-1985 and 1988-1989), Michigan State University, School of Packaging, East Lansing, MI (1991-1992) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Food Processing and Packaging, Munich, Germany (Summer 1994). He also served as Visiting (Food Chemistry) Professor in the Chemistry Department of the University of Cyprus (2010 and 2011) and the University of Patras, Patras, Greece (2004-2011). He currently works in the Department of Chemistry, University of Ioannina. His research interests include food chemistry, the analytical and mechanical aspects of food packaging, food analysis, the analysis of contaminants in foods, food authentication and non-thermal methods of food preservation.
