Prof. Dr. Luca Scalfi has been an Associate Professor, and since 2005, a full Professor of Physiology (Food and Human Nutrition and Applied Nutrition) in the Department of Food Science of the Federico II University of Naples (Faculty of Agriculture). He is the President of the Tutoring Commission for Degrees in Food Technologies in the Faculty of Agriculture. He has worked on the “The Students’ Ark” project in collaboration with the Psychological Counseling Service of Federico II University. Since 2006, he has been a member of the steering committee of the EURRECA (European Recommendation Aligned) network of excellence on the harmonization at the European level of the indications relating to the intake of micronutrients in the diet. Since 2007, he has been a member of the coordination group for the review of the Recommended Intake Levels of nutrients. He has collaborated with various departments of Federico
II University, Parthenope University, and other Italian universities. He has collaborative relationships with the Center for Disease Control of the Ministry of Health and the Research Institute for Food and Nutrition.
Dr. Alessandro Pinto is currently working as an Assistant Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition (Experimental Medicine Department), at the University of Rome La Sapienza. From 2011–2016 he was Vice President of the Degree Course in Dietetics. He also serves as the Deputy Head and member of the Council of the School of Specialization in Food Science at Sapienza University of Rome. He is a member of the Italian Society of Human Nutrition and the Italian Society of Surgery for Obesity and Metabolic Diseases. He has collaborated with working groups: SINU-INRAN for the fourth revision of the LARN—Reference Intake Levels of Nutrients and Energy for the Italian population (2012 Revision).
Dr. Valeria Gasperi has been an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry in a tenured position at Tor Vergata
University of Rome in the Department of Experimental Medicine since 2008. She completed her post-doc training at the University of Teramo between 2005 and 2008. She received a Doctoral degree in Medical Biotechnology in 2001 at the University of Naples Federico II and a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology in 2005 at Tor Vergata University of Rome. Her principal research activities are (1) the characterization of platelet-derived miRNAs in cancer and their role in tumor biology; (2) the study of miRNome in physiological and pathological conditions, with a particular focus on biomarker identification in clinical research by bioinformatics analysis of omics data; (3) the sudy of the regulation of intercellular communication (platelets, leukocytes, endothelium, tumor cells) with implications in cardiovascular and oncological fields; (4) the impact of phytochemical compounds on oxidative stress and inflammation
associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease, and obesity; (5) the study of megakaryocyte differentiation, thrombogenesis, and platelet activation in diabetes.
Isabella Savini received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1989. She is currently working as an Associate Professor of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at the Department of Experimental Medicine, University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. She is an Advisory Board member of the Italian Society of Human Nutrition (SINU) and a member of the Italian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SIB). Her current research focuses on the metabolism of vitamin C in normal and tumor cells.
