Giancarlo Solaini is a Professor of Alma Mater (Full
Professor of Biochemistry) at the Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor
Sciences University of Bologna, Italy. In 1972 he received the Laurea in
Chemistry cum laude (5 years), University of Bologna. Since 1974, he has been
performing experimental research in the field of Biochemistry at the Institute
of Biochemistry, University of Bologna, and at the Laboratory of Biochemistry
at Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari S. Anna, Pisa, Italy. He was a Post-doc
Fellow at Department of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, University of
Warwick, UK, a Visiting Researcher at the Department of Biochemistry, Royal
Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London (UK), a Guest Researcher
at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, MRC Cambridge (UK) to collaborate with
Prof. JE Walker (Nobel laureate), at the Department of Ophthalmology, USC, LA
(USA), and at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford (UK). His
main research interests are fundamental studies on enzyme structure and
kinetics, pathogenic mechanisms induced by mutations of mtDNA; ischemia and
hypoxia in mitochondrial pathophysiology; cellular bioenergetics, and
metabolism in normal and cancer cells. He is a member of the Italian
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Society (SIB) and a member of the Italian
Group of Biomembranes and Bioenergetics (GIBB).
Alessandra Baracca is a Full Professor of Biochemistry at the Department of
Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences, Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy. She received Laurea cum laude in Biological Sciences from the Faculty
of Mathematics, Physic and Natural Sciences, University of Bologna, in
1982, and her Ph.D. in Cellular Biology and Physiology from the University of
Bologna in 1988. She was a Research fellow at the Department of Bioenergetics, Institute
of Physiology, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague (1986) and Guest
researcher at the Department of Neurology, College of Physicians and
Surgeons, Columbia University (2002). She is an expert in cellular bioenergetics and mitochondrial pathophysiology. The main research interests are: pathogenic mechanisms of neurological disorders associated with mtDNA mutations and/or mitochondrial dysfunctions; hypoxia and mitochondria in pathophysiology; bioenergetics and metabolism
in normal and cancer cells. She is a member of the Italian Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology Society (SIB) and of the Italian Group of
Biomembranes and Bioenergetics (GIBB). Since 2023 she has also been a member of the Academy of Sciences of Bologna Institute.
