Hernâni Gonçalves was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1979. He received a Licenciatura degree in Technology Applied Mathematics, an M.Sc. degree in Computational Methods in Science and Engineering, and a Ph.D. degree in Geomatics from the University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, in 2002, 2004, and 2010, respectively. He worked as a researcher under the scope of a project in biomedical engineering, in the analysis of biomedical signals, from 2002 to 2005. During his Ph.D. (2006-2010), he worked in the automatic registration of satellite images, with a doctoral grant from the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), and between 2011 and 2017 worked at the Center for Health Technology and Services Research (CINTESIS) in the linear/nonlinear analysis of biomedical signals, with a post-doctoral grant also from FCT. Currently, he is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and the principal investigator of the Signal Processing Applications (SPA) research group at CINTESIS. His research interests include data analysis, biomedical signal analysis, and image processing.
João Bernardes is the Principal Investigator of the research group Charter of CINTESIS. He graduated and later earned his Doctoral Degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), Portugal, where he has been a Full Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics since 2005 and President of the General Council since 2022. He works as a Senior Graduate Doctor at the Hospital Centre of S. João in Porto, Portugal. He was the founder and Director of the Biomedical Simulation Centre of FMUP, vice-president of the Portuguese Society of Medical Education, and secretary of the Portuguese Society of Biomedical Engineering. He was the president of the Portuguese College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians in the years 2018 to 2023. He was the lead researcher of projects of the National Board for Scientific and Technical Research and of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, which gave way to the prototype and market model of the system for cardiotocography analysis SisPorto. He acts as a reviewer and is a member of the Editorial Council of several scientific journals, having authored and co-authored about 200 scientific articles in indexed journals.
