Author Biographies

Flávia Cristina Matos Oliveira studied biomedical science from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in 2003. She has completed specialisation in Clinical Haematology in 2005 and Masters in Infectious and Parasitic Agents Biology at UFPA in 2007 studying Mannose-binding Lectin (MBL) levels in patients infected with Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Her PhD was developed in Animal Health and Production in the Amazonia Program at the Federal Rural University of Amazônia (UFRA) from 2018 to 2021. During February 2020 to February 2021, she worked as visiting researcher at Utrecht University, the Netherlands (UU, 2020)—Procad Amazônia CAPES Scholarship (Brazil). From 2013 to 2021, she was preceptor of the Multiprofessional Program in Health Professional—Veterinary Medicine, in the area of Veterinary Clinical Pathology. She currently works as a laboratory technician at the Federal Rural University of Amazônia (UFRA), Institute of Animal Health and Production, where she coordinates and performs the exams requested by the Veterinary Hospital Professional team and develops researches in the area of animal laboratory medicine and guides biomedical research activities related to veterinary graduate programs. She has experience in haematology, biochemistry, blood clotting, rapid tests, molecular biology, parasitology, and regenerative medicine. She has previous experience working as a biomedical scientist at the Blood Center of Pará State (2003-2006) and Ophir Loyola Hospital (2011-2020).

Bart Spee has more than 18 years of experience in Molecular Biology and Veterinary Medicine. He has authored over 101 publications with a total citation of 4219 and an h-index of 31 (Scopus, 25 December 2023). Following a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology on pathways of regeneration and fibrosis of liver diseases, he took up a position as a post-doc at the Department of Pathology at the University of Leuven, Belgium, under the guidance of Prof. Tania Roskams. Here, he used molecular tools and combined these with the vast tissue bank at the pathology department, resulting in an increased knowledge of the activation of the adult stem cells of the liver including its neoplastic offspring. After an internship at the Laboratory of Experimental Carcinogenesis (NIH, Bethesda, VS) with Dr. Thorgeirsson where he worked on cholangiocarcinomas, he returned to Utrecht University as an assistant professor. Currently, he is investigating the use of stem cells, ranging from adult stem cells (organoids) to multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for the functional recovery of liver diseases.
