Author Biographies

Giovanni Pettorru received a B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Cagliari in 2020 with the thesis “Implementation of a parking occupancy detection system based on magnetometer sensor”. In 2022, he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Internet Engineering at the University of Cagliari by discussing the thesis “Secure and Low-Latency Communications Based on WebSocket and QUIC in the Internet of Things Scenario”. He is currently a PhD student at the University of Cagliari, with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DIEE/UdR CNIT). His research interests include network protocols and network security. He is a member of IEEE as a graduate student. He achieved an award at the IEEE ComSoc Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition during the ICC 2023 event. Additionally, he served as a PC member at the AQ-IoT 2023 conference.
Virginia Pilloni is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Cagliari, Italy. In 2013, she received a PhD degree in Information Engineering at the same University. She was a Research Fellow (2013-2015 and 2020-2021), and an Assistant Professor (2015-2020) at the same University. Her main research interests are on the Internet of Things, particularly in context-aware resource-efficient task allocation among connected devices, and user-aware efficient scheduling of appliances in Smart Building scenarios. She published more than 50 papers, for which she received more than 1000 citations and an h-index of 18 (Scopus source). Virginia participated in several regional, national, and international research projects. She is an expert evaluator for European H2020 and BELSPO projects. She was a co-founder of the academic spin-off GreenShare Srl. Virginia is an Editor of Elsevier Computer Networks and Frontiers in Communications and Networks. She has been a Guest Editor for several MDPI Special Issues. She has served as organization chair and program committee member of several international conferences. Virginia currently is an IEEE Senior Member. She is the Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Young Professionals (YP) Standing Committee. She is also the YP representative for the IEEE ComSoc EMEA region, a member of the IEEE ComSoc Member Services Board, and the IEEE ComSoc Strategic Planning Standing Committee.
Marco Martalò received a Ph.D. degree in Information Technologies from the University of Parma, Italy. From October 2007 to March 2008, he was a “Visiting Scholar” at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale De Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. From January 2009 to April 2012, he was a Post-Doc researcher at the University of Parma, Italy. From May 2012 to April 2017, he was an Assistant Professor (non-tenured, RTD-A) at the E-Campus University, Italy. From June 2017 to December 2020, he was a Senior Post-Doc researcher at the University of Parma, Italy. Since December 2020, he has been an Associate Professor in Telecommunications at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Cagliari, Italy, where he is a member of the Net4U laboratory. His research interests are in the design of low-complexity communication, distributed signal processing, and network security algorithms for wireless systems and networks, with a focus on the applications to next-generation communication systems and the Internet of Things. As of February 2024, Prof. Martalò authored more than 90 publications and his h-index is equal to 13 (according to Scopus). He is also the inventor of two Italian patents (one of them with international extension).
