He is the author of more than 250 original articles of research published in international journals in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, and immunology. He conducted his postdoctoral training at KU Leuven, where he studied the interaction between metabolism and cell proliferation. Later he continued his studies in Oxford, Brussels, London, and Ottawa, studying the role of protein kinase C in the energy metabolism of tumor cells. Since 1992, he has focused on the study of the pathophysiology of inflammatory processes, investigating the contribution of inflammation to the beginning of different pathologies, including cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Alberto Lázaro is an Assistant Professor in the Physiology Department, School of Medicine, Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). He is also a Chief Renal Physiopathology Laboratory, IiSGM-Gregorio Marañón Hospital. He obtained his Bachelor's in Biochemistry from UCM (2000) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biomedicine from the Autonomous University of Madrid (2006). He trained with Dr. Egido (Madrid) in renal–cardiovascular disease, with Dr. Bonventre (Harvard Medical School, Boston) in epithelial repair, with Dr. Rodriguez (NYU School of Medicine, New York) in renal damage by malaria, and with Dr. Tejedor (Madrid) in acute kidney injury (AKI) and nephrotoxicity. Since 2007, he has been working to better understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of acute kidney injury (AKI) and its prevention by searching for new therapeutic targets and protective strategies. He is a Member of the ASN. He was awarded the IV Prize for Technology and Knowledge Transfer 2018 (UCM), the XII Prize of the Renal Foundation ALCER 2017, and the IX Social Council award for “University–Society Knowledge Transfer” 2014, University of Alcalá, Madrid.
