Author Biographies

Marilena Anastasaki is a public health and epidemiology researcher at the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine (CSFM), School of Medicine, University of Crete, with a background in mathematics (BSc) and biostatistics (MSc). She is also a Stipendium researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, Linkoping University, Sweden. She is collaborating with CSFM’s Health Promotion Unit, affiliated with the University of Crete Research Center for Humanities, Social, and Education Sciences. She lectures at the Master of Public Health and Healthcare Management, the University of Crete, and Frederick University, Cyprus. Her research interests include epidemiology, public health, family practice research, statistics, and research methodology.

Elena Olga Christidi is a psychologist and the co-founder and scientific director of Orlando LGBT+ Mental Health Beyond the Stigma. She received her Ph.D. degree at the University of Athens. Her research and professional interests include trauma, the affirmative approach for trans youth, LGBTQI+ refugees, survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and torture, and kink/BDSM practices and identities.
Nancy Papathanasiou is a clinical psychologist and adjunct lecturer in the Department of Psychology (Panteion University of Social Sciences) and in the Department of Social Work (University of West Attica). She is also the Scientific Coordinator for the 11528 LGBT+ Helpline in Greece. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. Her research focuses currently on resilience and developmental psychopathology, adaptation, and well-being of LGBTQI+ individuals, and her clinical interests include sexual, gender, and relationship diversity, as well as community psychology.

Evika Karamagioli is a jurist who serves as a Scientific Associate of the MSc Global Health-Disaster Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and as a lecturer of the MSc in Digital Communication Media and Interaction Environments at the Media Faculty of the same university. She lectures in both faculties on health, humanities, participatory governance, and digital innovation for good. She holds a Ph.D. degree in social sciences from Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint. Since 2020, she has served as an honorary visiting assistant professor in humanitarian crisis management, communication, and technology at the Medical School, University of Bern, Switzerland. Her research interests include democratic innovation through participatory design methods and tools, civic empowerment and advocacy, open data as a civil society strengthening mechanism, risk communication, and disaster management.
Emmanouil Pikoulis is a board-certified general surgeon who has combined his background in emergency surgery and trauma surgical management with his special interest in global health, humanitarian aid, and disaster medicine. He received his Ph.D. degree at Athens Medical School. He now works at the MSc “Global Health–Disaster Medicine”, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. During his career, he has worked on various educational programs around development, disaster preparedness, and training all over the world.
Christos Lionis graduated as an MD from the University of Athens Medical School and is board-certified in both internal medicine and social medicine (public health). He also holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Crete with a focus on public health interventions and cardiovascular risk. He now works at the University of Crete Medical School, where he holds the Chair of General Practice and Primary Health Care. In addition to his role as a professor, he is the director of the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine. He has also acted as the Deputy General Director of the Regional Health and Welfare System of the Greek National Health Service for the Region of Crete. He has served as a board member in multiple professional associations and learned societies and as an advisor to the World Health Organization, where he also serves as a member of the Steering Group of the European Health Information Initiative since 2017, and he was appointed as member of the European Commission’s Expert Panel on Effective Ways of Investing in Health in 2019. He is actively involved in the development of primary care and general practice on Crete, particularly in rural areas.
