Jürgen J. Heinisch has been a Professor of Genetics at the University of Osnabrück since 2003. He finished his studies in biology at TH Darmstadt in 1982 and received his Ph.D. from TH Darmstadt in 1985 under the supervision of Prof. Friedrich K. Zimmermann. His postdoctoral studies were performed at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, with Prof. Jack von Borstel from 1986 to 1988, which was followed by a research assistance at the Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf from 1988 to 2000. He was a Professor of Fermentation Technology at the University of Hohenheim from 2000 to 2002. His research interests at the Division of Genetics of Osnabrück University include the biology of pro- and eukaryotic model organisms (E. coli and yeasts like S. cerevisiae, K. lactis, and H. uvarumi). His interests are both in basic science and in applied aspects, with a broad focus on central carbohydrate metabolism, cell wall integrity, and oxidative stress signaling. Applications relate to biotechnology (alcohol and heterologous protein production in yeasts) and medicine (conserved mechanisms in cancer development, treatment of pathogenic fungi).
