Author Biographies

Dr. Mary Acelle Garcia obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of the Philippines and her Doctor of Medicine from University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. She served as Chief Resident during her third year internal medicine residency training at Richmond University Medical Center in New York. She completed two fellowships: Geriatric Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Hospice & Palliative Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She is currently a full-time palliative medicine physician at Michael E. Debakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and serves as assistant professor in Baylor College of Medicine. Her passion is taking care of older adults and helping them attain the best quality of life despite their physical impairments.
Dr. Syed Imam is a Clinical Director of Geriatric and Extended Care at Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, Texas; Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine; President of American Medical Education Advancement; Course Director of the Geriatrics Board Review and Update; and has been Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine. He has over 10 years of VISTA EMR experience. Also, Dr. Syed Imam is a geriatrician in Houston, Texas, and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital and Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. He has a strong interest in Geriatrics Teaching, Telemedicine and Clinical Informatics. He received his medical degree from Patna Medical College and has been in practice for more than 20 years.
Dr. Ursula K. Braun is an Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. She also serves as the Director of Palliative Care at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas. She is board-certified in internal medicine, geriatrics, and palliative medicine. Her research interests are in dementia, medical decision-making at the end of life, and racial/ethnic disparities in care at the end of life.
Dr. Leanne Jackson is an Assistant Professor in the Section of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center where she runs the outpatient palliative care clinic. She holds an academic clinician-educator position at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, USA. Dr Jackson received her medical education and completed her internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. In 2014, she completed an Oncology fellowship, and in 2015 graduated from a Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship, also at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her interests lie within symptom burden and outcomes due to cancer therapy, advance care planning, as well as the use of Telemedicine to broaden access of Palliative Medicine to vulnerable/frail veterans. She is a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
