Dr. Junaid Arshad is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and a faculty member of the Division of Medical Oncology. He received his medical degree from King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at St. Mary's Hospital, Waterbury, CT. He joined the University of Arizona after finishing his Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship from the University of Miami, FL. He is a clinical and translational scientist with a focus on developing novel therapeutics for several areas of upper GI oncology. His clinical and research focus targets mainly the upper GI cancer, including gastrointestinal stromal tumors, gastric cancers, esophageal cancers, and neuroendocrine tumors. He is a part of several industry-sponsored clinical trials and has contributed to several peer-reviewed publications. His prior research focuses on the use of biomarkers such as circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in the diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of gastrointestinal stromal tumors. He has expanded his areas of research interest to include other disease modalities such as neuroendocrine cancers.
Dr. Amith Rao is currently an Internal Medicine Resident at the Banner University Medical Center, University of Arizona College of Medicine. He received his MD from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2022. He is a Residency at the University of Arizona Internal Medicine Residency Program—Tucson Campus.
Dr. Rohit Rao currently serves at the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. He received his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in bioengineering and biomedical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 2014 and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in molecular and developmental biology, and Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Cincinnati in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
Dr. Clinton Wu currently serves as a Resident Physician in Tucson, Arizona and is affiliated with Banner University Medical Center, University of Arizona. He received his DO from the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2022. He joined the University of Arizona Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Tucson Campus.
Prof. Dr. Juanita L. Merchant joined the faculty at the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Tucson in July 2018 as a Professor of Medicine in the University of Arizona Department of Medicine, Chief of the University of Arizona Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and a member of the Cancer Biology Research Program at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. In 2008, she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine and appointed a member of the National Institutes of Health Council of Councils. In 2016, she also joined the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a unit of the NIH. She attended Stanford University for her undergraduate studies, later earning her medical degree and a doctorate at Yale University School of Medicine. Afterward, she completed her internship and residency in internal medicine as well as a clinical and research fellowship at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital, before completing a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California Los Angeles. Prior to coming to the UA, she had been on the faculty at the University of Michigan since 1991. She is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.
