Toshifumi Yokota is a Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of Alberta, holding the title of the Friends of Garrett Cumming Research and Muscular Dystrophy Canada Endowed Research Chair. Her academic journey began with a Ph.D. in cell biology from the University of Tokyo. As a JSPS Research Fellow, she went on to work at Imperial College London and the Children's National Medical Center in Washington DC as a Research Associate before joining the University of Alberta. Her pioneering research has led to significant advancements in the treatment of muscular dystrophy. She has received numerous career awards, including the BioAlberta Scientific Achievement and Innovation Award, JSPS Young Scholar Award, and the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, edited three books, and served as a board member for several journals and organizations. Her work has been instrumental in the development of new therapies for muscular dystrophy and rare diseases.
