Prof. Dr. Maria M. Pintado received her BSc in Pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (1991) and a PhD in Biotechnology from the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) in 1999. She is an Associate Professor and Director of CBQF at the State Associate Laboratory and Associate Director at the College of Biotechnology of UCP. She is the Biobased and Biomedical Products group leader and coordinates the Bioactives and Bioproducts Research Laboratory. She has established a strong relationship within this industry, mainly in the food sector. Her main research interests include the development and characterization of bioactives and by-product valorization through bioprocesses and extraction processes, aiming to obtain high value-added products to be applied to food and other industries. She has co-authored ca. 400 papers in international journals, is a creator of 20 patents, has been involved in the supervision/co-supervision of 34 concluded PhD theses, and has coordinated/co-coordinated ca. 90 externally funded projects. She has an h-index of 68 (January 2024).
Prof. Freni K. Tavaria is currently an Assistant Professor at the Portuguese Catholic University where she teaches Microbiology, Cell Culture and Immunology. She received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Texas A&M University and a PhD in Biotechnology (Food Science and Engineering) from the Portuguese Catholic University. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the College of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University. Her main research interests include the study of antimicrobials for food and biomedical applications.
