Author Biographies

Carlos Rodriguez Franco has been a Senior Forester at USDA Forest Service Research and Development since 2018. He was a Deputy Chief at USDA Forest Service Research and Development from 2016 to 2018. He obtained his bachelor's in Agronomy with a major in Forestry at Universidad Autónoma de Chapingo in 1978, an M.S.S. in Silviculture with a minor in Statistics at Colegio de Psotgraduados, Chapingo, Mexico, in 1984, and a doctorate in Quantitative Silviculture at Yale University, School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, in 1988. He is a member of the Forest Service Research and Development Staff, and he is the principal advisor for strategic forest science synthesis. He provides high-level scientific and technical expertise to the Forest Service to accomplish its mission and strategic goals. He is the principal USDA Forest Service scientist and advisor on forestry innovation. His works cover an exceptionally broad and complex array of research spanning multidisciplinary components that must be successfully integrated to solve vegetation management, protection knowledge, and technology gaps. These major components include knowledge of research in forest inventory and analysis, silviculture, forest ecology, forest operations engineering, global climate change, fire sciences, forest products industry, and technology transfer.
Deborah S. Page-Dumroese is a Research Soil Scientist (Rocky Mountain Research Station) at the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Debbie obtained a Bachelor of Science (Natural Resources and Environmental Science) at the Grand Valley State University from 1978 to 1982 and a PhD (Forest Resources) at the University of Idaho College of Natural Resources from 1985 to 1988. Her research interests include soil productivity, soil disturbance, wood decay, and biochar.
Derek N. Pierson has been a Research Soil Scientist (Forest and woodland Ecosystems) at the Rocky Mountain Research Station since 2022. He obtained a B.S. in Microbiology at the University of Idaho in 2008, an M.S. in Forest Science at the Colorado State University in 2013, and a Ph.D. in Soil Science at the Oregon State University in 2020. His research interests include soil science and forest ecology.
