Dr. Stephanie Lam is currently a Research Associate at the University of Guelph (Guelph, Ontario). She completed her Ph.D. at the Department of Animal Biosciences (Centre for Genetic Improvement in Livestock), studying beef and dairy cattle feed efficiency using RNA-sequencing and functional genomics. Following her Ph.D., she completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (Lacombe, Alberta) in meat science and worked as an Agriculture Program Officer with Genome Alberta. Her current research is focused on feed efficiency and methane emissions in beef cattle.
Dr. Bonnie Mallard is currently a Professor of immunogenetics in the Department of Pathobiology at Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph. She is a member of the Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock (CGIL) at the university. She has been recognized at the national and international levels for her work on High Immune Response Technology (HIR) for improving the health of dairy cattle. In the last few years, she has focused on extending this technology for use in dairy sires and developing a genomics test for HIR in order to broaden its application. She has published extensively, with over 100 full-length articles in referred journals, and has presented hundreds of abstracts and oral presentations at scientific meetings.
Dr. Niel Karrow is a Professor at the Department of Animal Biosciences, Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph. His research interests focus on the genetic and epigenetic regulation of livestock neuroendocrine-immune systems and how this relates to inflammatory disease susceptibility. The genetic focus is on identifying and validating genetic markers associated with ruminant stress responsiveness and resistance to mastitis and Johne’s disease. The epigenetic focus is on identifying food components such as omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and fungal mycotoxins that affect neuroendocrine and immune development. He has 249 publications with 3711 citations.
Dr. Angela Canovas is an OAC Chair in Phenomics and Systems Biology and Professor of Beef Cattle and Small Ruminants Genomics at the University of Guelph, Department of Animal Biosciences, and part of the Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock (CGIL). She was born in Cordoba (Spain) and raised in Lleida, one of the most important agricultural regions in Spain. In 2011, she completed her Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics at the University of Lleida (Spain), obtaining several national and international awards, such as from the International Society of Animal Genetics. During her Ph.D. studies, she also had the opportunity to be a visiting student at the University of Bristol (UK; 2008), Iowa State University (USA; 2009), and the University of California-Davis (USA; 2010). After completing her Ph.D., she moved to the University of California-Davis with Dr. Juan F. Medrano as a Fulbright Excellence post-doctoral researcher (2012–2015). She has published more than 140 peer-reviewed manuscripts in high-impact scientific journals, over 400 articles/conferences proceedings, and over 50 invited talks at international conferences.
