Dr. Francesco Buonfiglio graduated in July 2014 from the faculty of medicine of the Federico II University in Naples, Italy, with the highest grade (110 Lode). In 2015, he moved to Germany, where he obtained the C1 German certificate in 2017. During his residency, he deepened his knowledge of the pathophysiology of retinal and optic nerve disorders. Later, he was promoted from senior physician to medical director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mainz University Medical Department at the Mainz University Eye Clinic from 1990 to 2014. He is the president of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG), the Association of Ophthalmological Chair Holders, a member of the Executive Committee, the Professional Association of German Ophthalmologists (BVA), and a member of the “Off-Label” expert group at the Federal Institute for Drugs. He has received several awards, including the Anagnostakis Trantas Award from the Greek Glaucoma Society and the Greek Ophthalmology in 2014, the PR Award for best crisis communication in 2011, and the Communication Prize of the German Health Industry Congress in 2011. His research focuses on glaucoma, glaucoma therapy, aqueous humor production, carbonicanhydrase inhibitors, molecular analyses, and imaging in ophthalmology.
