Markus Kipp has been a Director of the Institute of Anatomy at University Medical Center Rostock since 2018. He received his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Natural Sciences in 2011 and from the Faculty of Medicine in 2008 from Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen. His research interests mainly focus on understanding the physiology and pathology of the axon-oligodendrocyte-myelin unit. Particularly, he is interested in understanding to what extent stressed oligodendrocytes regulate peripheral immune cell recruitment and by which neuroanatomical pathways peripheral immune cells gain access to the CNS parenchyma. His future interests are about using smartphones and wearable devices to monitor behavioral changes in Multiple Sclerosis patients, complex gait analyses in mice, and control of innate immunity.
