Dr. Francesco Buonfiglio graduated in July 2014 from the faculty of medicine of the Federico II University in Naples, Italy, with the highest grade (110 cum laude). In 2015, he moved to Germany, where he obtained the C1 German certificate in 2017. During his residency, Dr. Buonfiglio deepened his knowledge of the pathophysiology of retinal and optic nerve disorders. Until 2021, he worked as a physician resident at the Department of Ophthalmology at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg, Germany. In October 2023, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis, an experimental study on the impact of hypercholesterolemia on endothelial function in ocular blood vessels, with the note “magna cum laude” at the Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. Prof. Dr. Norbert Pfeiffer is the Chief Executive Officer of Mainz University Medical Centre Germany and the head of the Department of Ophthalmology. In 2012, he was admitted to the Leopoldina. His research focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and the epidemiology of eye diseases. He has received numerous scientific awards including the prestigious Galenus von Pergamon Prize for the development of innovative glaucoma therapy.
Prof. Dr. Adrian Gericke is a senior physician, head of the cataract and refractive surgery department and of the department of ophthalmo-pharmacology and physiology in the Department of Ophthalmology, University Medical Center, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
