Weidong Deng obtained his PhD in Animal Science from the Khon Kaen University of Thailand in 2007. Presently, Prof. Dr. Deng serves as the dean of the Faculty of Animal Science and Technology at Yunnan Agricultural University, China. His contributions to animal genetics have led to the publication of 30 research articles. He has been honored with the first prize in the Yunnan Provincial Natural Science Award and holds the esteemed role of executive director at the Livestock Ecology Branch of the Chinese Association of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine. Moreover, he served as the associate editor of Gene magazine from 2014 to 2015 and has successfully secured project funding exceeding USD 3 million. His primary research interests revolve around the large-scale evolution of mammals and the exploration, preservation, and utilization of genetic resources in livestock and poultry. Of significant note is his groundbreaking discovery of a unique sheep breed demonstrating characteristics similar to those of black-boned chickens, a phenomenon previously observed only among chicken species on a global scale (Deng WD, Yang SL, Huo YQ, Gou X, Shi XW, Mao HM. Physiological and genetic characteristics of black-boned sheep (Ovis aries). Anim Genet. 2006, 37(6):586-588. doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.2006.01530.x.).
