Sergio Neves Monteiro graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1966. He went to the United States, invited by a professor from the University of Florida (UF), at where he obtained Master (1968) and PhD (1972) degrees, both in Materials Science and Engineering. Between his master's and doctorate, he returned in 1969 to UFRJ as a professor to participate in the creation of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Program in the Institute Alberto Luiz Coimbra for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE). He was a full professor of the Metallurgical Engineering department at UFRJ and COPPE until he retired from UFRJ in 1993. Then he joined the Darcy Ribeiro State University of the North of Rio de Janeiro (UENF), where he took part in the implementation of the university and created the Advanced Materials Laboratory.  Since 1994 he is a full professor of the Graduate Program of Materials Science and Engineering at the Military Institute of Engineering (IME- Rio de Janeiro). He is one of the permanent organizers of the TMS (US) Symposium of Characterization of Minerals, Metals and Materials. He is the Executive Editor of the Journal of Materials Research and Technology (Elsevier). He is a fellowship 1A from the Brazilian National Research Foundation (CNPq) for scientific productivity. He has published over 750 articles in national and international journals, as well as more than 200 book chapters.
