Leonardo Marchiori is a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Environment and Geotechnics) and PhD researcher at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University Beira Interior, the research center GeoBioTec, funded by FCT-Portugal, and FibEnTech. His main research fields are in situ and laboratory geotechnical and geological characterization of natural and artificial soils, industrial by-products valorization, and bioclogging in porous materials.
Antonio Albuquerque is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Beira Interior (Covilhã, Portugal), senior researcher at the FibEnTech and the GeoBioTec research centers (UBI, Portugal), and Invited Professor at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Federal University of Goiás (Goiânia, Brazil) and the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (Wrocław, Poland). He is a member of the editorial board of six international journals and author or co-author of approximately 380 publications, including books, patents, book chapters, journal papers, conference papers, technical standards, technical reports, and academic texts. He was President of the Council of Environmental Engineering of the Portuguese Order of Engineers, Scientific Coordinator of FibEnTech, Director of the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering at UBI, and Vice-President of the Portuguese Association of Water Resources (APRH). He is currently President of the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of UBI and Vice-president of the Portuguese Association of Sanitary Engineering (APESB). Research fields: 1. Nutrient removal in biofilm technologies. 2. Wastewater-induced bioclogging in porous materials. 3. Nature-based solutions for wastewater treatment and reuse. 4. Sustainable water use and reuse. 5. Mineral and industrial waste valorization.
Prof. Dr. Luis Andrade Pais is a Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Beira Interior. He is a Geological Engineer and received his Master's in Civil Engineering from The University of Coimbra in 1998 and his Doctoral Degree in Civil Engineering from The University of Beira Interior in 2007. He performs research in Mining Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical and Civil Engineering. His current project is the 'Mechanical behavior of dumps from coal mines'.
Prof. Dr. Luís Ferreira Gomes has a degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 1987 and completed a University Extension Course on Slope Stability at the University of Aveiro in 1988, receiving a PhD at the same university in the Geotechnical Area (Applied Geology) in 1992. He joined the University of Beira Interior in 1993 and has been an Associate Professor since 1999, in the ambit the proofs in the area of Civil Engineering (Geotechnics). He is a senior member of the Institution of Engineering and also a member of the Portuguese Geotechnical Society, the Portuguese Water Resources Association, and several international societies such as IAEG (International Association of Engineering Geology), ISSMGE (International Society of Mechanics Soils and Foundations Engineering), ISRM (International Society for Rock Mechanics), IGS (International Geosynthetics Society), IAH (International Society of Hydrogeologists) and PROGEO (The European Association for the Conservation of the Geological Heritage). His professional activity is divided mainly into Education, Research, and Consulting areas, particularly in Groundwater Resources, Geothermics, and continued Engineering Geology. He has published about a hundred articles distributed by national and international journals and national and international conferences, mostly in books from publishers with scientific referees.
Prof. Dr. Victor Cavaleiro is a Full Professor in Civil Engineering at UBI, a specialist in Geotechnics, and a Senior Researcher at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DECA) at UBI and the GeoBioTec research unit. His main areas of research are the performance of mineral, agro-industrial, and industrial residues in earthworks; methodologies and analysis of soil stabilization and reinforcement on slopes and dams; geotechnical and hydro-geological behavior in earth and rock massifs; and the geotechnical and geophysical prospecting of sub-soil.
