Paolo Tessari graduated in Medicine and Surgery in Padua in 1977 with the highest honors, specializing in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases in 1984, and in Cardiology in 1991. From 1988–1992, he was a University Researcher; from 1992–2006, he was Associate Professor in Internal Medicine; since 2006 he has been Full Professor of Applied Medical Technical Sciences at the Department of Medicine (DIMED), University of Padova. His research interests were initially directed toward the study of the regulation of energy substrates, particularly lipids, in both humans and experimental animals. From 1981 to 1982, he was a Research Fellow at the Endocrine Research Unit of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. Since 1993, he has devoted himself to the study of protein and amino acid turnover in humans using stable isotopes. He has developed a multi-isotopic technique for the study of postprandial amino acid metabolism. For his original contributions in these areas, he won the National Award of the Italian Society of Diabetology. He has devoted himself to the study of the kinetics of amino acids and compounds involved in vascular disease (methionine, homocysteine, arginine, nitric oxide) in type 2 diabetes, aging, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, also evaluating the effects of insulin. He has also devoted himself to proteomics and gene expression studies in cultured skin fibroblasts from patients with type 1 diabetes, also in relation to the presence of renal microvascular complications.
