Author Biographies

Ricardo M. S. Sendão is a chemistry PhD student currently enrolled in studies concerning the development of visible light-based photocatalysts for water treatment. He completed his MSc in biochemistry in 2019 and his BSc in Biochemistry in 2017, both awarded by the University of Porto. He has been the recipient of three research grants focused on the development of novel carbon-based nanomaterials. Furthermore, he was also in an EU-funded project under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions program (CHARISMA) as a research fellow. His research interests include nanomaterials, photoluminescence, carbon dots and their sustainable synthesis and development, sunlight- and visible light-driven photocatalysis, and the study of the environmental impacts of some nanomaterials via life cycle assessments.
Joaquim C. G. Esteves da Silva is a full professor of environmental sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, Porto (Portugal). He is a referee in the most important scientific chemistry/environmental journals, with more than 100 papers per year. He was an expert in project evaluation scientific panels in Portugal, Chile, Argentina, and Poland, and for the Human Frontier Science Program Organization, among others. He has supervised more than 17 PhD theses and 50 MSc theses. He has published about 290 scientific papers in international journals, 20 book chapters, 1 granted patent (PCT/IB2014/067142), and 1 submitted (PCT/IB2019/053642) patent. His main research focuses on bioluminescence/chemiluminescence; green synthesis of luminescence nanoparticles; environmental sustainability; green materials/coatings; water disinfection and disinfection by-products; natural organic matter; soil remediation; and human health risk assessment.
Luís Pinto da Silva is an assistant professor at the Department of Geosciences, Environment and Spatial Planning, University of Porto. He has been a Course Director, chairman of the Scientific Committee, and Chairman of the Program Follow-up Committee for the Master’s Course in environmental science and technology since September 2023. He is also a member of the Program Follow-up Committee for the Bachelor in Environmental Sciences and Technology since 2022. His current research interests include chemi- and bio-luminescence and their application to cancer therapy; development of engineered nanomaterials for sensing and (photo)catalysis; environmental sustainability assessment; and study of the radiative effect effect of atmospheric brown carbon.
