Hernan Mejia-Renteria completed his specialized training in
cardiology at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital in Madrid and later trained at
the same center as an interventional cardiologist. He obtained a Doctorate
degree (Ph.D.) from the Complutense University of Madrid, and his thesis was
focused on the application of coronary physiology in different clinical scenarios
of ischemic heart disease. He is accredited in specific training for the
practice of hemodynamics and interventional cardiology by the Spanish Society
of Cardiology. He has published numerous scientific articles on coronary
physiology, functional angiography, intracoronary imaging techniques, and
takotsubo syndrome and is the author of several chapters in academic
cardiology books. His research interests include coronary artery obstruction,
reserves, percutaneous coronary intervention, takotsubo cardiomyopathy,
cardiogenic shock, and coronary artery spasm.
Nieves Gonzalo is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist
in the Interventional Cardiology Department at Clinico San Carlos University
Hospital in Madrid. She obtained her Specialist Certification in Cardiology
after training at the same hospital. Subsequently, she underwent a research
fellowship at Thoraxcenter, Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands)
under the supervision of Professor Patrick Serruys, focused mainly on
intracoronary imaging and bioabsorbable stents. In 2010, she obtained her Ph.D.
with the thesis “Optical coherence tomography for the assessment of coronary
atherosclerosis and vessel response after stent implantation”. Recent research
projects as principal investigator include a study about the assessment of
neoatherosclerosis and its clinical impact in patients with restenosis and
research regarding vessel injury and healing evaluation with different stent
platforms evaluated with OCT. She is a dedicated educationalist with
involvement in many areas of complex PCI, serving currently as Deputy Editor
for Eurointervention and as a committee member of EuroPCR.
