Dr. Joana M. Gil-Mohapel obtained a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and an M.Sc. in Cell Biology at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. She then completed a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Lund University, Sweden, followed by 4 years of post-doctoral training and 2 years as a Research Associate at the University of Victoria, Canada. Her research has been funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, and the Brazilian Federal Government Science Without Borders Program. Her research interests include understanding how brain plasticity is affected by neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions. She co-authored over 70 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, 22 book chapters, and 30 conference abstracts on these topics. Presently, Dr. Gil-Mohapel is an Assistant Teaching Professor and the Associate Director of Curriculum Years 1 and 2 for the Undergraduate Medical Program at the University of British Columbia, Canada.
Dr. Patricia S. Brocardo is a neuroscientist studying how neuroplasticity can modulate neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. She is currently an associate professor of Histology and supervisor for Master's and Ph.D. degrees in the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. She is the coordinator of the Laboratory of Neuroplasticity (LANEP). She has 69 publications with 2124 citations and an h-index of 29 (Scopus, 24 October 2023). Her research interests include Neuroscience, Neurodegenerative Diseases, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Antioxidants, Oxidative Stress, Neurodegeneration Brain, Behavioral Neuroscience, Immunohistochemistry and Neuropharmacology.
