Prof. Shugeng Cao is an associate member of the Cancer Biology Program at the UH Cancer Center and a professor at Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, University of Hawaii at Hilo. He obtained a PhD in chemistry from the National University of Singapore in 1999. Since his graduation, he has worked as a senior research scientist at MerLion Pharmaceuticals GmbH (1998-2003), senior research fellow at Virginia Tech (2003-2008), instructor/lab director at the Harvard Medical School (2008-2013), and assistant professor at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center (203-2015). He has been working as a professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo for more than eight years (associate professor 2015-2021; full-time professor 2021-present). His laboratory focuses on exploring bacteria, endophytic fungi, and marine-associated microorganisms for anticancer drug discovery. His lab also works on herbal medicines used for diseases related to cancer and diabetes, etc., and small molecules with various biological functions in bacteria and the human body.
