Herbert L. DuPont earned a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University (Chemistry) and an MD from Emory University School of Medicine (1965) and is currently a Professor of Infectious Diseases, University of Texas Health Science Center. His work in the field of enteric infections and the microbiome has resulted in 773 publications (413 original science and 360 review articles). He has served as President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America as well as the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, and was the first President of the International Society of Travel Medicine. His honors include the following: Honorary Doctorate from the University of Zurich (Switzerland); Honorary Doctor of Science, Ohio Wesleyan University; Distinguished Achievement Citation, Ohio Wesleyan University; Distinguished Medical Achievement Award from Emory University School of Medicine; the Bronze Medal of Honor from the French Government for his work in establishing the field of travel medicine; the Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases; the Alexander Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievements in Infectious Diseases, the Infectious Diseases Society of America; and the Regents’ Teaching Award, Designated Distinguished Teaching Professor, the University of Texas System. His research interests include C. difficile infection, the microbiome, and enteric infections.
