AB Experience is conceptualised in both academic and policy circles as a more-or-less direct effect of the design of the built environment. Drawing on findings from a research project that investigated people's everyday experiences of designed urban environments in two UK towns, this paper suggests at least two reasons why sensory encounters between individuals and built environments cannot in fact be understood entirely as a consequence of the design features of those environments. Drawing from empirical analysis based on surveys, ethnographic 'walk-alongs' and photo-elicitation interviews, we argue that distinct senses of place do depend on the sensory experiencing of built environments. However, that experiencing is significantly mediated in two ways. First, it is mediated by bodily mobility: in particular, the walking practices specific to a particular built environment. Secondly, sensory experiences are intimately intertwined with perceptual memories that mediate the present moment of experience in various ways: by multiplying, judging and dulling the sensory encounter. In conclusion, it is argued that work on sensory urban experiencing needs to address more fully the diversity and paradoxes produced by different forms of mobility through, and perceptual memories of, built environments.

TI Resisting motorization in Guangzhou
SO HABITAT INTERNATIONAL
LA English
DT Article
DE Motorization; Pedestrians; Non-motorized transport; Neighbourhood planning; Urban environment
AB Private motorization has accompanied unprecedented urbanization in China, as a matter of public policy. Planning at the provincial and city levels has supported the rapid build-up of the private car fleet in major cities through the development of regional and urban highway networks, higher capacity local streets and much higher standards for car parking in new developments. By contrast, urban planning until 1994 concentrated on the building of community and the support for a non-motorized lifestyle. Guangzhou experienced particularly rapid city-building during this period because it was at the centre of the market reforms launched in 1978. The communities that were built form a broad ring around the historic core of the city, constituting one of the most significant obstacles to government ambitions to maintain the recent growth rates in car ownership. Guangyuan and Jiangnanxi are examples of such middle-class, home-owning communities where daily life remains almost exclusively non-motorized. Self-organized groups in the community are increasingly vocal and active in their demands to enhance local environmental quality and restrict local motorization. Local municipal authorities, although increasingly active and autonomous, try to strike a balance between government objectives and local demands. The application of motorization illustrates the growing gap between high-level policy and grassroots urban planning in Guangzhou. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB We investigate whether the design of the built environment encourages walking above and beyond individuals' attitudes toward walking. With data from a regional travel survey, we use regression analyses to examine differences in neighborhood walking trips among residents with positive and negative attitudes toward walking. The results show that built and social environment factors have a differential impact on walking trips depending on a person's walking attitudes. Therefore, strategies to promote positive walking attitudes should be pursued in tandem with land use policies to encourage neighborhood walking.

AB Planning pedestrian environments requires assumptions about how pedestrians will respond to characteristics of the walking environment in city centers. European city centers, especially medieval ones, have been more and more pedestrianized in the last two decades. Two major groups, shopkeepers and pedestrians profit from this enlargement of public space. The perception of shopkeepers is to attract more buyers from walkways and from adjacent places in the city centers. At the same time, the perception of pedestrians is to walk on pleasant and peaceful way without confronting other pedestrians in a chaotic situation. This paper considers the perceptions of shopkeepers and pedestrians in a medium-sized Portuguese city center using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model. A field survey was conducted in January 2010 to summarize different perceptions of using sidewalks and to know the responses of shopkeepers and pedestrians. Both were interviewed during the field survey. Results show that there are several interesting issues, such as short-term parking on walkways to buy goods from the adjacent shops or illegal encroachment of sidewalks because of goods or propaganda displayed to attract more buyers to the shops. These issues need to be considered for planning a better walkway environment in the Guimaraes city center that has a long tradition of walking since medieval times.
