WEPP raw output files – naming convention

This folder contains WEPP hillslope output files for all combinations of:
- rainfall intensity (mm h⁻¹)
- shrub planting density (plants per plot)
- slope (%)
- restoration phase (I–III)

The filenames follow this pattern:

  {rain} intensity, {density} plants, {slope}% phase {phase}

where:

- {rain} = rainfall intensity in mm h⁻¹
              (50, 80, 120 for experimental storms and 150, 180 for extreme storms)

- {density} = shrub planting density (number of shrubs per plot, plot area = 7 m × 1.3 m = 9.1 m²)

The equivalent shrub density in plants ha⁻¹ is:

                  plants_ha = plants_plot × 10,000 / 9.1

Approximate values for the densities used are:

                  0 plants/plot ≈ 0 plants/ha (control)
                  2 plants/plot ≈ 1,905 plants/ha
                  4 plants/plot ≈ 3,810 plants/ha
                  6 plants/plot ≈ 5,714 plants/ha
                  8 plants/plot ≈ 7,619 plants/ha
                  10 plants/plot ≈ 9,524 plants/ha
                  12 plants/plot ≈ 11,429 plants/ha

(Use the exact values reported in the main manuscript for comparisons.)

- {slope}% = uniform hillslope gradient in percent
10% = gentle slope (extrapolated scenario)
20% = experimental slope (field plots)
30% = steep slope (extrapolated scenario)

- {phase} = restoration phase, coded as:
phase 1 = Phase I (Caragana shrubs only)
phase 2 = Phase II (Caragana + biological soil crust)
phase 3 = Phase III (Caragana + biocrust + grasses)

Examples:

  "50 intensity, 0 plants, 20% phase 1"
    → rainfall intensity 50 mm h⁻¹,
      0 shrubs per plot (0 plants/ha, bare/control),
      20% slope,
      restoration Phase I (shrubs only).

  "80 intensity, 4 plants, 20% phase 2"
    → rainfall intensity 80 mm h⁻¹,
      4 shrubs per plot (≈ 4,396 plants/ha),
      20% slope,
restoration Phase II (shrubs + biocrust).

  "120 intensity, 10 plants, 30% phase 3"
    → rainfall intensity 120 mm h⁻¹,
      10 shrubs per plot (≈ 10,989 plants/ha),
      30% slope,
restoration Phase III (shrubs + biocrust + grasses).

Interpretation:

Each file therefore contains WEPP output for a single hillslope scenario uniquely defined by:
  - rainfall intensity,
  - shrub density (both as plants/plot and, via the above conversion, plants/ha),
  - slope,
  - and restoration phase.

All simulations use a hillslope length of 7 m and width of 1.3 m, as described in the main text and in the WEPP configuration section of the Supplementary material.
